Actually the origional Metroid had several problems that kept it from being considered 'NES Gold', but I'll not go into that.

Lack of map and lack of saving, which were both availiable technologies at the time. The password system was annoying and complex. And when you died, you lost all your power ups.

Metroid is ok at best, but hardly gold, especially compared to Super Metroid, which is everything a Metroid game should be.

Link SHOULD be in the game. However, the only suitable sprites of him for the game are from Zelda II. Hardly NES Gold material, eh?

Lack of map I cannot debate, and saving was only included with the Legend of Zelda at that point, they couldn't afford to put it in Metroid because it was unknown due to a lack of advertising (Unlike LoZ, which was advertised like crazy). Password was annoying though...

However, dying did not cost you your powerups at all! You simply respawned at the nearest area entrance with 30 health units, with as many missiles as you had when you died and all your power ups still there. Going back to only 30 health is a nuisance, yes, but if you don't try and rush through the game it's not that much of a bother. I should know, I've beaten it five or so times (And died a lot too, but not as many times as I did with other NES games!)

Example: Lets say SMB1-3 sucked ass, but Every Mario game onward was epic, shooting the plumber into super-stardom.

Well guess who you wouldn't be seeing in NESAS if that were the case.

In short, classic means shit.
