It's friday afternoon at Port Poire's High School. In one class, a French class, the students were awaiting the bell. Their teacher, Mrs. Archambault, a mid-30 cloudcuckoolanding novel-loving woman was sitting on her desk, reading a novel as the class worked. Mrs.Archembault wore a t-shirt, a leather jacket, jeans, a pair of small glasses and a smooth haircut that dropped all the way to the level of her chin on each side, with a bang dropping to the nose clip of her glasses. Her eyes are big and always half-closed, tired-looking. Those eyes scream her absent-minded nature.
Four hours, four minutes, one minute before the bell rang. The class's air was filled with the anticipation of the school week's end, as the lunatic French Teacher was standing up in front, explaining the homework to the class.
"Your homework,", the French Teacher explained in a rather monotone, sleepy but content voice, with a smile and blank stare, "is to make an essay on yourself and those around you. Be sure to correct your spelling and grammar mistakes."
On the front row, a short and chubby teenager wearing an orange long-sleeved shirt, cotton sweatpants and white gloves, sporting messy, curly hair and a rather big nose, was already pondering what he would write up.
"(Well, let's see here...)", the teenager thought to himself. "(I should start with the basics, um... «My name is Marc-André Damoleguy-» nah, it wouldn't be a good intro. Think more encyclopedic-style!)"
The bell rang. People were rushing out of the classroom, as Marc-André was standing up.
"(Ehh, what if the prof doesn't like that. She's more into novel-style...)", the messy-haired student continued to think.
"(«Marc-André Damoleguy, better known as Mandew, is a 16-years-old student at Port Poire High-School and a local inhabitant of Port Poire. His actual home lies in Bois des Pins. He resides with his sister, Lily-Riley, and his adoptive family - his other sister, Nancy Luckylure, and his parents, Nataly Luckylure and John Archeoleo.»)"
As the boy, Mandew, walked towards the door, he felt something tapping his right shoulder. He turned his head to see a somewhat average-sized 16-years-old girl wearing a blue shirt and long-skirt and blond hair, with two large bangs curled outwards on the sides, and a round toupee covering half of her forehead. She wore a star-shaped brooch on her shirt and held an outback hat in her left hand.
"Hey, Marc.", the girl greeted Mandew.
"Hi, Nancy.", Mandew replied. "(«Nancy, Mandew's adoptive sister, is a confident, adventurous girl with the same age and goes to the same class as Mandew. While Mandew usually sits in the front row, Nancy sits in the back. She's not exactly a great academic-stuff student, but she excels at physical education, where Mandew fails a lot.»)"
"What're you thinking about?", Nancy asked to Mandew.
"Um, just my homework.", Mandew replied.
"Eh, don't worry so much about that. You'll have a whole week-end to do it!", Nancy remarked. "That is, if you ever get moving out of the class."
Mandew realized that he's been standing here and thinking for a bit too long. He took his books and walked out of the class,
Nancy on his heels. Once they got out, Nancy and Mandew went downstairs, side-by-side, to the locker room.
"I'll go to my locker and do my own things. You and Lilley should go ahead and not wait for me, ok? I'll meet up with you in not long.", Nancy told Mandew before going on her own way. Mandew walked past two rows of lockers and turned to the left.
Another girl was waiting for him at the fifth locker, which was open. She was tall, both of body and face, wore a teal shirt, jeans and white gloves. She has black hair falling down to the shoulder, with two bangs in front of her hair. She had a big, open mouth smile on her face. At the moment, she wore a backpack on her back, which she held the strap of with her left hand. Her right hand was holding a carving pick and a hammer.
"Hey, bro!", the girl said to Mandew. "What did take ya so long?"
"Thinking about week-end homework.", Mandew said. "«Lily-Riley, commonly called "Lilley", is Mandew's biological, younger sister. She's 15 years old.Lilley is a creative and cheerful girl, and she's fairly smart. She's really caring for others close to her but doesn't seem to take anything else seriously.»"
"Nice description of me, bro!", Lilley pointed out.
"Wait, did I really say that out loud?", Mandew wondered, as he went into the open locker to get a backpack and a shovel, before slamming the locker shut and putting a lock on it.
"Yep, you did! Better be more careful next time, huh?", Lilley teased, before starting to walk forward, Mandew at her side.
They both walked out of the locker room, and out of the school.
"So, how was your day?", Mandew asked to his sister, walking to the north.
"Oh, it was nice and stuff. Our math prof almost lost an argument to Tonio today! You should have seen those two, it was funny.", Lilley commented.
"Again? What were they arguing about?"
"They were arguing abo-", Lilley said, before stopping. Mandew continued walking, so Lilley drew him back by the shoulder, and pointed to five boys standing in front of them. The boy in the middle, arm-crossed, was about as short as Mandew. He wore a dark red shirt and a dark green vest. He had a small but still visible set of sideburns and was wearing a piece of cloth on his head, forming what looked like a reversed cloth bowl with a tie in the back.
The boy frowned his eyebrows and gave a spiteful look on his face.
"Dew Man...", the boy said.
Mandew also frowned his eyebrows and gave a spiteful look on his face.
"Mud Boy...", Mandew replied.
"(«Since Mandew went to school, he had a rival that everyone calls Mud boy. Mud boy is one of the school's local bullies. Word is, he's currently a new recruit of Port Poire's street gang.»)"
The two of them gave the books they were holding to the person at their right, and walked forward, at each others. The two raised their left hand to the left side of themselves and then, suddenly, they stopped in front of each others, at one arm and a half distance. The two of them suddenly made a slapping motion with their arms, and each of their hands landed into the other's. They shook hands for a second and then raised their thumbs.
"I challenge you to a Thumb War game!", Mud Boy said.
"I accept your challenge!", Mandew replied.
One of the boy that was standing on the left of Mudboy counted up to 3, and at Go, the game began.
"You're not going to beat me this time, Dew man! I've been practicing a lot on my technique.", Mud boy taunted, going at Mandew's thumb with a left hook.
"We'll see that, Mud boy.", Mandew replied, as his thumb dodged Mud boy's thumb and then went jabbing at the latter.
Mud boy's thumb took the oppotunity to dodge and pin down Mandew's thumb. It was now down for the count, struggling to get out of Mud boy's thumb's clutches. Mandew's face was horrified. Mud boy's face was grinning. The crowd (composed of a
whooping five people) was in suspense as the referee counted for the K.O.
"One, two, three!", the referee counted. "Knock Out! Vincent wins!", he concluded.
The two released their arms and stepped back. Mud boy went back to his arm-crossed pose as Mandew rolled his eyes and waited for Mud boy to get out of the way.
"So, feeling ashamed yet?", Mud boy asked. Mandew simply shook his head negatively.
"Not even a wee little bit?", he asked once more. Mandew shook his head negatively again.
"Oh well! If this thumb war game didn't put hurt to your pride, we're gonna have to rough you up! Come on, guys! Let's get him!"
"(«Unfortunately, Mandew's rivalry with mud boy causes him to be a common target of his bullying.»)"
The boys around Mud boy nodded and prepared their weapons. Mandew stood there with an "Oh crap!" face, and Lilley was stuck out of ideas what to do. One of Mud boy's friend advanced with garden rake in hand. He took a swing of it, about to clobber Mandew with it. Mandew took his shovel and tried to do the same, but he was a bit too stressed to do it correctly.
The rake started to swing at Mandew, but suddenly, something interrupted it. A hook and a string wrapped around the garden rake's handle, and pulled it away from the guy's hands. Mandew sidestepped just in time to dodge and to look behind him;
Nancy was reeling the garden rake to her using a fishing rod.
"(«Fortunately for Mandew, Nancy is a member of the school's Bucketheads, a group formed of people formed to prevent bullying around school. It was formed since bullying was incredibly common at Port Poire's school. Word is the bullying is often caused by overconfident recruits of a chaotic neutral street gang called the Slashers. So basically, guys like Mud boy.»)"
"Cease this fighting, delinquents!", Nancy commanded at the offenders, walking into the fray. Mandew dropped his shovel on the ground, but Mud Boy trying to advance nearer of Mandew discretely.
"Not a step further!", Nancy said, making Mud boy stop. "Drop your weapons, all of you!", Nancy commanded, making Lilley drop her hammer and nail. Mud boy dropped his shovel, and two other of his guys dropped their weapons. One of the guys, however, stepped forwards at Nancy, weapon still in hand, a dictionary.
"You.", Nancy said, looking at the offender, making him a sign to drop it.
"What if I don't drop my weapon?", the guy said.
Nancy took the guy by the collar of his shirt and lifted him off the ground. "What did you say?", Nancy asked. The guy instantly dropped his weapon, and Nancy dropped him on the ground.
"Now, pick up your stuff and SCRAM!", Nancy ordered.
"Your sister won't always be there for you, Dew Man!", Mud boy snidely commented, before picking up his shovel and ordering his friends off. Mandew, at the statement, was a bit embarrassed.
"Now, Marc, Lily, I must be going home. The hockey night's starting real soon. See ya there!", Nancy said, before running off.
Mandew and Lilley walked another way as Lilley tried to cheer Mandew up.
